Hello dear LJ-licans,

I guess the subject can shed the reason why I'm writing this entry into my journal.Whenever I submit a new entry it always does give a submission of guilt,and I must admit,I do facebookwww.facebook.com/saintoctober more than coming to livejournalsaintoctober.livejournal.comon daily basis as I used to since I started blogging.

I would be so enthralled to see comments from LJ-friends on my recipe blog,on poem entries, and entries on my life and happenings in Bangladesh ,in Singapore and kitchen.However,that died out as I found my new admiration in facebook as I have discovered long lost friends networking with me again after eons.I am afraid to say livejournal doesn't accomplish that.

Then,again,Livejournal isn't about just networking,it's about writing! first and foremost.Keeping a journal and it has so much to offer to those who has the art in their language to post their hobbies,interests and various subject matter that cannot be disclosed without censorship or locked entry to friends only.

After typing the first three paragraphs I tried to put this entry under a cut and I failed to do so, as I can't seem to cut and paste the above into the box. I most unfortunately, pronounce myself guilty of neglecting LJ for so long and I paying the price for it....more so for any one who bothers to read this poop.

What's been happening? ---

I am trying to create a business solution for rural people in remote villages of Bangladesh who doesn't have access to electricity. Solar power lanterns which is more portable and cheaper than getting an entire solar power system who couldn't afford it in the short term.
The trouble is I couldn't get the Bangladesh customs to release the goods as the clearing and forwarding agents still want to make money of my duty free goodswww.nbr-bd.org/customs.html and they got the custom officers in the cargo warehouse to tell me my goods aren't solar power equipments even though the only way these solar lanterns generate its power source is from the sun. Just read how many times I typed solar to explain my situation.It is that solar!

That is that in Bangladesh,and the work is still in process.In the meantime,I'm in Singapore because I've started to grown a certain fascination in this country for all its promises.If I do get the job I applied for and I do hope I get it,I can become this island's Permanent Resident which entitles me to a certain priviledges. Particularly, I can travel between Bangladesh-Singapore without the requirement of a visa for a number of years..and yes..years with and an "s".

So,I certainly hope things move towards a more positive direction from this point on.In the meantime,I shall enjoy my tae kwon do and attempt to lose 10 kgs. oh, I weigh 70 kgs now, I gained 10 kg more from 60kg since my time returning to laziness and eating only my mom's cooking and ordering takeouts. Dhaka is truly a life of sheer luxury.

I know I cannot be forgiven for my sins of being away from this wonderful world of livejournal for so long,but I had my reasons - university,family,thesis project,volunteer work,paid work,RELATIONSHIPS!
Yup,yup, I had it all in one gush of a tidal wave and learning how to swallow it all and I am sure it is hard for those around me too.

I am back today not to throw my life crap on you all but to say something interesting.
Its about an impression I grew about business and pioneers who with their self-made business made significant changes in people's life and the world.

The following is an article I wrote for my class project during my masters in entrepreneurship course in Nanyang Technological University in Singapore.I hope you could all provide more insights and thoughts on how you view the world of independent businesses.

As I see it,we are all entrepreneurs in our own way,as we all seek an individual journey to find our way to reach our destination....wherever that might be.

Introduction

To call oneself, an entrepreneur, has become a latest trend by many aspiring and successful individuals in the world market in various industries today. What does it take to have such an identity and what meaning does it behold to this proud individual? Does the entrepreneur need to be under certain class of discipline in order to gain the title or is it so easy for anyone to claim the name?

Perhaps some light can be shed on the nature of this phenomenon as the discussion takes further in this analysis.

The Business Entrepreneur versus the Artist as an Entrepreneur

An entrepreneur is known to be an expert in managing the given resources to control a business. In economics he is one of those crucial factors of production. The entrepreneur is also reputed to accept risks in order to start-up a new business. Thus, he also helps to create. We can assume in terms of the entrepreneur; PRODUCTION=CREATION.

The entrepreneur doesn’t only help produce products and services and sustains them but also creates new ideas and ventures to keep the cycles of the economic machine running at its perpetual pace. From the sounds of things, he ought to be the kind of expert who would possess all the intricate knowledge of the elements that plays in the world market, possibly may even have obtained a recognized diploma in his trade from a reputed institution.

An artist doesn’t only have his unique talent to create an object of affection centring on so many themes but also must posses a talent to expose his masterpiece to receive recognition in the art world. Same goes for an entrepreneur who seeks his identity as a recognisable ‘business man’ in the capital world.

As an entrepreneur, he would prepare a business plan and a presentation for the venture capitalists and show off his talent during an elevator’s pitch where a 30 seconds speech could decide his success or failure in the venture. It is usual for a start-up business to seek funding and a professional entrepreneur would always try to master the arts in formulating a sound business, marketing and a financial plan and paste them on an attracting presentation to woo the audience for appraisal.

An artist’s work can only be appreciated if it has those attributes and quality that would woo the critics and art aficionados. If he cannot differentiate his work from the rest he would just be a plain Joe Brushstroke and not a Picasso.

The Artist Entrepreneur

Famous artists of the world are known to convey a social message to their audience through their work in many forms of expression, whether by a theatrical play, a poem, or a painting. There are so many masterpieces that still attract people today provoking their minds into deep thinking and realizing the passion of the creator of arts. Namely by Pablo Picasso, Monet, Rembrandt, and the little known Shahbuddin who’s work is renowned both in France and Bangladesh. These names are chosen not only for their mass popularity but also for their entrepreneurial acumen in exposing their art as masterpieces incorporated with monetary value compelling consumers to buy. They are well versed in their respective market and understand their customers or the art aficionados and try to feed their thirst in new forms of expressions.

Picasso would use benchmarking to identify market leaders and use his own product development programme to entice demand by creating new styles. Art enthusiasts would shift their taste from Picasso’s Blue Period to his Rose period and then to Cubism which were all his differentiated products or art masterpieces in different period.[1] Same goes for Ipod, Intel or BMW on their behaviour of releasing their upgraded series or new versions into the market which feeds the consumer’s thirst for new and better gadgets ameliorating their lifestyle. Picasso, same as Ipod and BMW was able to differentiate himself with his name alone and thus it became his branding.

Pablo Picasso’s work also held a sense of social responsibility. His commissioned painting Guernica by the then Spanish government in the 1930’s caught the world attention of the Spanish civil war and raised funds in solidarity of the sovereign power of Spain. It still holds true to its grandeur and the monumental work has become an anti-war symbol and currently a tapestry copy is placed at the entrance of the Security Council in the United Nations in New York City.

Peter Gabriel, a well known English musician, first came to fame with Genesis but his popularity sprung to greater life when he went solo. He focused on promoting world music and created the REAL WORLD Studios and record label to facilitate various artists from all over the globe. He is also involved in educating Western culture about artists like Nusrat Fateh Ali from Pakistan, and Youssou N’Dour from Senegal, both of whom are also influential and entrepreneurial and branded themselves with their name. They are all Picassos in their trade. Peter Gabriel is also involved with World of Music, Arts and Dance (WOMAD) which festival comprising of live musical performances, workshops and dance held worldwide in Europe, Australia, and even Singapore.

Peter Gabriel and like any other contemporary artists have a large social conscious which comes entailing with their celebrity status but their commitment to their work tells us their serious intent in developing greater social awareness and betterment. So, it comes to mind can social responsibility be enterprised and commercially distributed? The answer is most definitely yes.

Social Entrepreneur versus the Artist Entrepreneur

Social entrepreneurs strive to address the social problems and use their entrepreneurial principles to make a positive social change. A typical business entrepreneur would see his gross margins as his performance indicator, whereas, a social entrepreneur would assess himself through his impact on society. They tend to work with other social groups, government or NGO’s.

However, in a country called Bangladesh, there’s a boom in entrepreneurial culture and the profession is not dominated by top industrialist or diploma graduates-but peasants!

Grameen Bank, a bank for the poor, has made thousands of women and destitute families from rural areas, into entrepreneurs by giving small loans on micro-credit. Initial borrowers didn’t even graduate from secondary school. The bank was founded by the recent Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, a social entrepreneur himself, however a trained economist, started lending money to the rural poor in Bangladesh. Now, microfinance is a world movement as lenders witness poor people becoming profitable customers.

Grameen bank also has a branch in New York where it has already disbursed $50,000 in loans to groups of immigrant women in Jackson Heights in New York’s borough of Queens. It plans to offer $176m in the next five years within New York City.[2]

Muhammad Yunus is also a member of Golden Elders along with founders Peter Gabriel (the artist entrepreneur), Richard Branson (the business entrepreneur), and Nelson Mandela (political entrepreneur) which discusses issues to solve global conflict. Members also include the likes of Desmond Tutu, Graca Machel,Kofi Annan, Ela Bhatt,Gro Harlem Brundtland, Jimmy Carter, Li Zhaoxing and Mary Robinson.

Artists of Hollywood the likes of Sean Penn, who openly criticizes the Bush Administration call for war on terror and Angelina Jolie, an ambassador for United Nations High Commissioner for refugees (UNHCR) are very few examples of those movie celebrities who uses their fame and status to raise not only social but political awareness at almost near levels of politicians. The only difference is they do not raise campaigns for presidential vote. Wait a minute!! Wasn’t Ronald Reagan an actor before he became a president? Arnold Schwarzenegger was an actor before he became the Governor of California. Is there a common trend here in place? Very interesting indeed!

Political entrepreneur versus the Artist entrepreneur

A political entrepreneur could be better explained by using the examples of Fidel Castro or Nelson Mandela. They both had great social causes that brought about great historical change in their country and gave birth to a new movement in politics and policy-making. It ended by both becoming leaders in their respective countries and formulated policies that shape Cuba and South Africa today.

Politics involve risks and those who takes this venture are very well entrepreneurs themselves.

Sean Penn and Angelina Jolie along with Peter Gabriel took risks to bring about a changing result in the world they perceived to be a necessity and thus still battles for it.

A personal evaluation

An entrepreneur according to the above discussion is no longer an individual of business alone. He is a pioneer and a seeker of success in various fields of discipline, be it social, political, or even art. Therefore, I believe, being an entrepreneur is an accession which can take place naturally when it comes to the pursuit of a success through personal endurance and courage.

Unfortunately,I won't be in Bangladesh at this moment.
Its just shameful to know how far people can act upon their selfishness and foolish meaningless pride.
how people still see others as being lower than them and that one superior than others.
Its good to be individualistic but not at the expense at relinquishing others as inferior.
We are all human yet as people we all have our unique identity which makes us all knowing each other differently so special..so exotic and wonderful.

Lets not judge negatively people for their difference,whether it be by skin colour,state of origin,status or whatever!
Show respect and acknowledge people as we are human. Learn to live in peace. Have a friendly heart. Be open to accept before you deny.

This is for the sake of admitting that I have been neglecting my journal with great remorse!

However,its not without reason.Life is getting tougher followed by the unthinkable decisions I have placed myself in taking.

As much as I would write a lot more but time doesn't permit me to do so do at this moment.

I've been thinking about the countless organizations and aid agencies that find their way in third world countries with their glorious agendas in saving us from what not.
well.....
I'm asking them and you,where are they and what are they doing and how effective are they?
Cyclone Sidr that has ravaged Bangladesh affecting 1 million people rendering them homeless and without food and water for 5 days.The death toll from its initial number of 2000 has risen to 3100 according to the BBC news on their website

..and it is expected to go higher as countless are still missing.I understand as a sovereign nation we have our own responsibilities,but we are doing the best we can,given our incompetencies.However,how are priorities set by the international community,when calamaties such as this happen to a country like Bangladesh.

I also wonder how the better-off few people of Bangladesh set their own priorities to help their own?How is it that they take the initiative?

What I'm trying to say is this,why do I even have to raise these questions.Why am I not properly informed on how I can help?There are so many expats and so many so called "elite-few" who could come together to provide any little help they can with the available resources at their disposable.How long are we going to be so damn dependent on international aid?How high is the death toll going to rise in the aftermath of the cyclone?Its more grievous that the deaths during the cyclone itself.

I wouldn't know where I go from here.There's hasn't been much happening and thats exactly how I feel like.
There has been a lot of expectations not fulfilled and a certain high ones are running low on faith.
I'm not sure if I'm still walkin' on the path I've set out from the beginning since I stepped out of my domain.
This place I'm venturing on my own,I'm yet to call it home.How can I where there's another one which is calling.Perhaps,that is what keeping me from acting at my full pace.
Who am I kiddin'?I've realized my potential.There's still so much to learn and still so much I haven't done.I know this as I've seen many how they have set out and become the people they are today.I may not know all of them personally,but its enough to tell me,I haven't given my all.

Perhaps this is what inspired the song I'm workin' on now.Here it goes...

Searching through this foreign land

I understand that I've been neglegting my LJ-lican friends here and that I haven't been updating as often as I should have due to so many unavoidable factors -exam preparations,student visa renewal issues,bureaucracy,a dysfunctional institute,lost in thinking of family and missing friends.......

However,today is the day I'm overwhelmed with joy.I feel like I've grown wings and about to fly with my wings flapping wild.I'm in a state of bliss.Care to ask why and I quote from a report by Jonathan Stevenson,

"Bangladesh caused a sensational World Cup upset by beating South Africa in an extraordinary Super 8 match in Guyana."
Oh gosh,an upset you say?Its going to be an uproar of chants of joy on every street of Dhaka if you ask me.We made headlines today!

You heard me right.
I was sitting in the loo thinking nothing at all.While I was pooping I felt myself move involuntarily downwards till my head was nearly on my kness with my shoulders moving left to right till while I was still in sitting position.

I thought I must have been daydreaming because Iwas still sleeping which I'm always until I get my shower.
Later,in the day I heard from everyone that there were actually 3 tremors felt all over Singapore originating from an earthquake in Indonesia.

This post is dedicated to those who's dead and those who's stll missing.

In consideration of the new year,I cooked dinner for my buddies at home.
Beef curry and fried mash potatoes and we had them all with fry bread or 'luuchi' as it is widely known in bengali in Bangladesh.I would update on the fry bread recipe as soon as I get the photo uploaded in the computer.Hope you like the recipe as much as my buddies ate everything on the table to the last crumb!!

My first visit to a haunted house in Singapore

There are lot of urban legends in Singapore of haunted buildings,houses etc.There are only a few that had actual paranormal events and famous among the locals here.One of the greatest ones is the abondoned once General Hospital of Singapore located at the Changi area.It dates back from the WWII period.
We were eight of us-four boys and four girls-all after a barbeque dinner and a few fun and silly games decided why not go see the famous place in the east end we live in.Since I was the only non-local among them,they figured it would be a big treat for me.So we took our friend's car,all 8 of us to Changi after hours,which was after 12am when there no public transport(no bus nor train).Hence the cars our only means of transportation.
    We came across this very dark street after we made a corner from the main road;pitch black to be more precise.The creepy part was when we moved in one of the car's battery went dead.Since we were uphill,the car started to move back down the hill while our attempt to get the car started again.After the 3rd attempt the car regained power and we started on our ghostly experience.
    We parked our car a few metres before the sign where it had said "NO TRESSPASSING","State land",and there were two huge concrete blocks to give you an idea if you havn't read the afore mentioned warning.We did but who the hell cares?hehe!
So we went in the hospital.The place was huge but it was still pitch black.All that we saw was what the ray of light from our small pocket torch light provided.It was amazing.The place was surprisingly well made,and the swtichboards and the tiles on the floor still looked clean and in good condition.Why the state didn't tear the building down is anyone's guess.However,the place was amazing.We went to the C-section where the rooms the hospital beds were gave the impression of crammed place,whereas in B-section where it read in the entrace SAF(Singapore armed forces) ward had tiles still almost sparkly clean and looked maintaned.Yet when we climbed up the stairs there were broken glasses and paint coming off the walls.When we saw the switchboards on every floor we went were still in good condition.Does that sound amazing to you?
    Anyhow,we went all the way up to the rooftop where there was a puddle of water but it was a view of the place from the top which made us dare all the dengue or malaria that might be infested in that dirty water.The view of the big river that divides the main island with the other small one.We saw ships and trawlers passing by during the remaining hours we were there.We stayed till 2 am and during that time we saw lights coming out from the doorway we came up the roof.There was another group who came to visit the haunted place.For some reasons they didn't climb the ladder we took and we distinctly heard whispers and footsteps.A while later we heard a loud scream of a girl,perhaps from that group and a naughty friend might have spooked her.
She didn't stop screaming for a long time.She was pretty darn scared.We came down from the roof and started our way for the cars.
NO GHOSTS except for the sound of slow water dripping and the scream and other strange noises I can't come up with describable words.
Overall,it was fun and I also managed to spook one of the girls and there was this indian girl who was bitchin' about it.Haha...well....it was night well spent.

I've been wondering how my current life would have turned out if I had done certain things differently.However,it isn't as if the means by which I have come upon executing my actions been entirely under my disposal.I had some limitations and can't actually blame myself wholly.Then again,the final decision was all mine ENTIRELY.

I've been reading aprilia27
recent journal entry saying how hard it is for her not having any job contributing to all her troubles of supporting her only child.What would happen if I can't find a job after I graduate?Singapore doesn't allow undergradutes to work under a student visa but I've started going for interviews and submitting applications anyhow.I heard my ex-high school friend in Toronto getting into ERNEST & YOUNG a year before he graduates which is obviously getting me even more worried if I'm on the right track..and furthermore I've this funny sheep

haunting me on msn putting me out of focus from my original state of mind.
I need to think straight.Try to concentrate on my current track.Aiming for 80% on all my final year papers can't be all bad a goal.I still have a chance at scoring for a first class honors and I will give it my all.I can understand that at times I'm not as perceptive as I should be due to a lack of greater intelligence as so generously SOME people have so honestly shared with me.........but I'm still HUMAN..yet I can't find any solace i saying so,it really doesn't bring any comfort.
I lack a great deal for what I should have to suffice the social order of things yet I still strive to live in it and have conformed to it for my own well being...or so I thought..
Amazingly enough,it doesn't hinder me to have some level of joy and freedom every once in a while.
